Understanding depth filtration

A depth medium is a three-dimensional porous network. Particles are retained within the media and at the upstream cake, so performance changes as loading progresses. Initial pressure drop, pressure rise, filtrate clarity and total throughput are more informative together than any single catalogue property.

Parameters that are related but not interchangeable

  • Thickness: physical sheet depth; it can influence holding capacity and equipment fit.
  • GSM: media mass per square metre; not a direct micron rating.
  • Porosity/permeability: ease of fluid passage under a defined method.
  • Wet and dry strength: resistance to handling and rupture before and after saturation.
  • Retention: fraction of a defined challenge captured under stated conditions.
  • Efficiency: a percentage that is meaningful only with particle size, challenge and test method.

  • Fluid name and complete composition
  • Normal and maximum temperature
  • Viscosity at filtration temperature
  • Batch volume or continuous flow
  • Solids concentration and particle information
  • Desired filtrate clarity or retention target
  • Existing filter type and housing model
  • Media dimensions and drawing
  • Clean and terminal differential pressure
  • Current grade and observed problem
  • Cleaning, sanitation or disposal method
  • Required certificates and declarations
